Short Bio
Ilga B. Winicov Harrington, Ph.D. was born in Riga. Latvia. She experienced in her childhood the devastation of WW II, in a German Labor camp and subsequently as a refugee in a Displaced Persons Camp. She emigrated and became a US citizen in 1956.
She was educated as a microbiologist at the University of Pennsylvania (B.A. and Ph.D.) and the University of Wisconsin (M.S.). Her professional career spanned microbiology, biochemistry and molecular biology closely involved with DNA advancements in science. Her research as a University professor focused on mechanisms of gene regulation in animal and plant systems and salt tolerance in plants resulting in more than 60 publications and many lectures on these topics.
In later years she has also pursued writing in both literary and culinary contexts. To date 6 short stories have been published in Goose River Anthology, an extensive series of ‘Recollections’ (in Latvian) in the Latvian newspaper “Laiks” and the book “Uncharted Journey from Riga”, which is appearing in press early November 2022. This book follows her journey to her adopted country as well as discovery of the joy of science, especially as a woman professor in Academia with its challenges in the second half of the 20th century. Other unpublished work consists of a manuscript: “Ethelbert Stories” for children about the adventures of a chipmunk Ethelbert and his cousin in a cove on the ME coast. Culinary writing encompasses her ongoing food column “Thrifty Good Food” in a ME local paper for the last 14 years and her book “How to Eat Healthy and Well for less then $5.00 a Day”, published in 2008, inviting readers to take charge of their food budget in face of the 2008 financial crash.
Ilga currently lives in coastal Maine with her husband and two cats. Her children and grandchildren are scattered but remain in close contact. In addition to her passion for science and writing, she has traveled widely, loves music and gardening and of course – cooking.
